Big Concept: Modern Physics
Topic: Photoelectric Effect
Bloom's Taxonomy: Remember, Understand
Learning Goal: Students can identify the major difficulties classical wave theory faced in explaining the photoelectric effect (threshold frequency, instantaneous emission, and kinetic energy's independence from light intensity). Students can explain Einstein's "Photon Theory" and understand the photon energy formula. Students will be able to apply the photoelectric equation to calculate the maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons and determine whether the photoelectric effect will occur.
Key Learning Points: Students can define the photoelectric effect. Knowing the failure of classical physics based on experimental observations, and contradictions with classical wave theory. Students can explain that light shines on a metal surface, and the metal emits electrons (photoelectrons). The photoelectrons can be emitted by light, but the emission is limited by the photon energy, or the frequency of light, not the intensity of light. The photon energy above a certain threshold can generate electrons, and the intensity of light is related to the number of electrons generated.

Grade: Ninth grade
Focus Time: 20 minutes
Background Knowledge: Students have learned the kinetic energy formula, and have the knowledge of the Law of Conservation of Energy. Students have the knowledge of the relationship between wave speed, wavelength, and frequency; and the classical wave energy is determined by its "amplitude^2".
