Big Concept: Mechanics
Topic: Centripetal Force
Bloom's Taxonomy: Analyze, Apply, Understand, Remember
Learning Goal: Students can recognize the nature of centripetal Force which is a net force that always acts perpendicular to an object's velocity to keep it moving in a circular path. Students learn to have a correct concept of centripetal force and dispel the "Centrifugal Force" misconception. Students can confidently solve standard centripetal force problems, and using mathematical relationships and kinematics. Understand angular variables such as angular displacement, angular velocity, frequency, and period, and relate them find the differences of linear velocity and circular motion. Mathematically deduce how changing specific variables alters the required centripetal force. Students can identify and provide examples of "what force" provides centripetal force in everyday situations.
Key Learning Points: Students know the nature of centripetal force. Students can improve the math skills to resolve the centripetal force, centripetal acceleration, and student can learn the relation of angular kinematics (such as period, frequency and angular velocity) with circular motion. Students can also learn that the "Centrifugal Force" only needs to be introduced mathematically if you are observing the motion from a non-inertial frame of reference to make Newton's laws appear to work.

Grade: 10th Grade
Focus Time: 30 Minutes
Background Knowledge: Students have the knowledge of the simple vectors analysis, and know the velocity, force are vectors. Students have learned the Newtons Law of motion, especially the difference velocity and uniform speed, and the applied force on an object can change the motion of object. Students can plot the free-body diagram, and can describe the rotational motion and calculate the speed of an object in circular motion.
